The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Isabela State University (ISU) – Cauayan Campus, and LGU-Cauayan City recently conducted a Smart City Assessment and Roadmap Formulation in Borongan City, Samar. The initiative aims to enhance the city’s smart and sustainable capabilities and address science and technology challenges while creating economic development opportunities. The event was part of the iSCENE2023 initiative, which promotes smart and sustainable initiatives nationwide.
Key figures such as Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan C. Agda and DOST Region VIII Regional Director Engr. Ernesto M. Granada, along with other officials, spearheaded the said activity. Presentations were given by Ms. Raquel B. Santos, the Smart City Focal Person of DOST Region II, and Atty. Reina B. Santos, the City Infotech Officer of Cauayan City. They shared insights and best practices for building smart and sustainable communities.
Dr. Betchie E. Aguinaldo, from Isabela State University’s Business Intelligence Research and Development Center (BIRDC), also discussed technologies and innovations for urban improvement. The workshop resulted in the formulation of Borongan City’s Smart City Roadmap, addressing challenges related to healthcare, education, infrastructure, and climate change.
The Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) provided valuable inputs and recommendations, and a tripartite partnership was established between DOST Region VIII, LGU Borongan City, and ESSU through a Memorandum of Understanding. This initiative signifies a promising step toward transforming Borongan City into a smarter, sustainable, and more livable future.
