San Fernando La Union initiates Smart City Transformation in partnership with DOST and Regional Partners
In a significant step towards transforming the City of San Fernando, La Union into a Smart City, the Business Intelligence Research and Development Center (BIRD-C), in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology Region 2 (DOST R02), co-organized a 3-day Orientation, Assessment, and Planning Workshop. This program is a joint effort involving the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office Region 1, the Provincial Science and Technology Office of La Union, the City Government of San Fernando, La Union, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), and in partnership with DOST R02, Cauayan City LGU, and Isabela State University, October 23.
The workshop is designed to provide insights and strategies for realizing the Smart City vision. Over three days, participants will engage in discussions and workshops pertaining to Smart City concepts. The topics for the first day include understanding the Smart City concept from a global perspective, an introduction to Smart Infrastructure and Smart Communities, the DOST Smart and Sustainable Communities Program, and its implementation model, a journey into a Smart and Sustainable City through the case of Cauayan City, and integrated information systems for Smart and Sustainable Communities, demonstrated through partnerships between DOST, local government units (LGUs), and universities. Additionally, a series of workshops focusing on Smart City development and the localization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will take place.
The event will feature Dr. Betchie E. Aguinaldo, BIRD-C Director, Atty. Reina E. Santos, the Smart City Focal Person of the City Government of Cauayan, and Ms. Raquel Santos, DOST R02 Smart City Focal Person, as key speakers. This collaborative effort aims to pave the way for San Fernando, La Union, to embrace innovative technology and practices in its journey toward becoming a Smart City, contributing to a brighter, more sustainable future.
